925 Sterling Silver

925 sterling silver is composed of 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. This combination improves the durability and strength of the silver.

Genuine sterling silver jewellery, such as ours, is often stamped with "925" or "sterling" to indicate its silver content. Be sure to look out for this when you are purchasing any sterling silver jewellery.

Sterling silver is generally hypoallergenic, making it a suitable option for those with sensitive skin, although some individuals may still react to the copper component or other metals used in the alloy, so please be mindful of this.

Sterling silver can tarnish over time due to its copper content reacting with sulfur in the air or other environmental factors. The thickness of the plating affects the durability and longevity of the gold layer on the jewellery. At Nusands, we pride ourselves in providing you with the highest quality jewellery by plating our sterling silver pieces with a 5-micron thickness, compared to the industry standard, which is as low as 0.5-micron - 3-micron thickness to be classified as 'gold vermeil'. 

Gold vermeil jewellery provides a luxurious and high-end appearance, similar to solid gold. The plating provides a bright and shiny finish and is significantly less expensive than solid gold jewellery, making it a highly attractive option for those who want the look and feel of solid gold without the price tag.

Even with a 5-micron thickness, gold plating can wear off over time, especially with frequent use. The rate of wear depends on factors such as skin acidity, sweat, exposure to elements (including showers, spas and saunas), and overall care and handling of the jewellery. If the gold plating wears off, the jewellery can be re-plated to restore its original appearance. This process involves cleaning the piece and applying a new layer of gold plating.
