What Do You Really Know About The Jewellery You Are Buying?
Let's discuss the FACTS about 925 Sterling Silver and Gold Vermeil
925 Sterling Silver
925 sterling silver is composed of 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. This combination improves the durability and strength of the silver.
Genuine sterling silver jewellery, such as ours, is often stamped with "925" or "sterling" to indicate its silver content. Be sure to look out for this when you are purchasing any sterling silver jewellery.
Sterling silver is generally hypoallergenic, making it a suitable option for those with sensitive skin, although some individuals may still react to the copper component or other metals used in the alloy, so please be mindful of this.
Sterling silver can tarnish over time due to its copper content reacting with sulfur in the air or other environmental factors. However, tarnish can be easily cleaned with proper care and maintenance. Please see our Care Guide to make sure you are looking after your jewellery properly. The better care you take, the longer your piece will last.
To keep sterling silver jewellery looking its best, it should be stored in a cool, dry environment, such as your Nusands collector's box or pouch, cleaned regularly with a soft polish cloth, and kept away from harsh chemicals, sunlight and moisture.
It's bright, shiny appearance and durability have made sterling silver a favourite in the jewellery industry, appealing to a wide range of styles and personalities, which is why we chose to use this material at Nusands. We want to bring the personality out of every individual, expressing their own unique style.
We take pride in our unique pieces and offer a range of jewellery in our collection, from a shiny finish, oxidised finish and 18k gold-plated finish. All of our pieces are coated with an anti-tarnish coating, which helps prevent discolouration and acts as a protective layer to ensure you can show off your jewellery for as long as possible.
Gold Vermeil (5-Micron Gold Plating)
We plate all our jewellery with 5-micron thick 18k gold, which is considered a high-quality gold plating. The thickness of the plating affects the durability and longevity of the gold layer on the jewellery. At Nusands, we pride ourselves in providing you with the highest quality jewellery by plating our sterling silver pieces with a 5-micron thickness, compared to the industry standard, which is as low as 0.5-micron - 3-micron thickness to be classified as 'gold vermeil'.
Gold vermeil jewellery provides a luxurious and high-end appearance, similar to solid gold. The plating provides a bright and shiny finish and is significantly less expensive than solid gold jewellery, making it a highly attractive option for those who want the look and feel of solid gold without the price tag.
Even with a 5-micron thickness, gold plating can wear off over time, especially with frequent use. The rate of wear depends on factors such as skin acidity, sweat, exposure to elements (including showers, spas and saunas), and overall care and handling of the jewellery. If the gold plating wears off, the jewellery can be re-plated to restore its original appearance. This process involves cleaning the piece and applying a new layer of gold plating.
Gold-plated jewellery should be cared for properly to maintain its shine and appearance. It should be kept away from harsh chemicals, perfumes, direct sunlight and moisture. Regularly cleaning your pieces with a soft polish cloth can help preserve its lustre and shine. Please see our Care Guide to make sure you are looking after your jewellery properly. The better care you take, the longer your piece will last.
Remember this, 'jewellery should be the last thing you put on when getting dressed, and the first thing you take off when getting undressed'.
