Care Guide

Look after your Nu pieces and they will look after you

When you purchase jewellery, it is important to take proper care to ensure it lasts. All shiny sterling silver and gold vermeil (18k gold-plated) pieces are considered demi-fine jewellery, which means they need a little extra TLC.

  • 925 Sterling Silver:
925 Sterling Silver is a lightweight metal composed of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. This combination improves the durability and strength of the silver. All of our Sterling Silver jewellery are stamped with "925" to indicate its silver content.

Sterling silver can tarnish over time due to its copper content reacting with sulfur in the air or other environmental factors. However, tarnish can be easily cleaned with proper care and maintenance.
  • Gold Vermeil (18K Gold):
Not to be confused with solid gold, our vermeil (pronounced ver-may) is a thick layer of 18k gold plating that provides the luxurious look and feel of solid gold jewellery at a fraction of the price.

We plate all our jewellery with 5-micron thick 18k gold, which is considered the highest quality gold plating. The thickness of the plating affects the durability and longevity of the gold layer on the jewellery. We pride ourselves in providing you with the highest quality jewellery, surpassing
the industry standard, which is as low as 0.5-micron - 3-micron thickness to be classified as 'gold vermeil'.

Even with a 5-micron thickness, gold plating is still susceptible to signs of wear and tear. The rate of wear depends on factors such as skin acidity, sweat, exposure to elements and overall care and handling of the jewellery.

To ensure the long-lasting lustre and shine of your jewellery, we recommend following these care guidelines:

  • Polishing / Cleaning:
Proactive maintenance is key. All of our jewellery should be stored in a cool, dry environment, such as our Nusands collector's box or pouch, polished/cleaned regularly with our Nusands Luxe Polish Cloth and kept away from harsh chemicals (including perfumes and lotions), showers, spas and saunas, direct sunlight and moisture to keep your pieces looking shiny and new.

For a heavier clean, use a mild soap and fresh water with a damp cloth to gently cleanse your jewellery. Rinse again with fresh water and pat dry with a soft cloth.

  • Mindful Wear:
Also be mindful that not wearing your jewellery enough (and not storing it properly) can cause just as much damage as wearing it all the time.  Wearing your pieces regularly will help keep the jewellery looking it's best as your skin's natural oils will preserve its shine.

    Remember this:

Jewellery should always be the last thing you put on after getting dressed and the first thing you take off before getting undressed.
